Provence – Francia
“Là Provence”, in recent years has become an obsession for me. There is no rose wine in the world that does not get compared to the wines of Provençal. For a winemaker from Abruzzo who talks about Cerasuoli you can imagine the drama! In Provence the atmosphere is very Mediterranean, especially in the coastal area. Fields of lavender and olive groves are the setting for hills rich in Mediterranean scrub where beautiful wine districts take turns that look like gardens for their rational forms. Chateaux Saint Marguerite, the winery we visited, looked exactly like this: a vineyard garden surrounded by typically Mediterranean flora close to the spectacular Cotê D’Azur. In this company Vermentino, Carignano, Grenache and Cinsault are cultiuvated that testify the strong link with the vines of the Tyrrhenian area, but there are also Cabernet and Syrah. A particularity of the place is the presence of a very unique soil; a clay composed of shale and quartz that crumbles very easily and shines in the sunlight. So much so that if you are lucky on full moon nights you can see the glare of the moon shining from the ground creating a unique atmosphere.
